Smoky eyes

Q. Want to smoulder your way down the aisle on the big day? There's no better way to do just that than with soft, smoky eyes. Renowned make-up artist Kate Hughes talks us through the steps.

A. Kate Hughes says: Firstly smooth a little concealer on to your eyelids, which will ensure your smoky eyeshadows stay put.

Take a black kohl eyeliner and draw a line along the upper and lower lash lines, extending it outwards at the end. Then soften the lines with a narrow make-up brush. For a more dramatic finish you could also apply the eyeliner inside the lower lash line.

Next apply a light beige or golden highlighter over the entire eyelid. I used a MAC pigment pot in vanilla.

Now apply a dark burgundy hue - I used MAC's sketch - to the upper and lower lash lines, using a sponge applicator. With the clean side of the applicator blend the black and burgundy tones together so there are no clear lines.

Finally blend a grey taupe shade, like quarry by MAC, into the socket of the eyes with a medium sized brush. Again, soften any lines. When creating a soft, smoky eye the secret is to blend, blend and blend some more!

Finish the look with a jet black mascara on the top lashes. I love Clinique's High Impact Mascara. Hold the wand at an angle, so you apply it right down to the lash roots, which will really open up the eyes.

How can I play up my blue eyes?

Q. I have fair skin, blonde hair and very blue eyes. I wear minimal make-up on a day-to-day basis as I don't like to look too over-done but I would really like to accentuate my eyes for my wedding. Can you make any suggestions?

A. Kate Hughes says: A made-up face can look a bit over the top if you are just wearing your jeans, but on the big day you'll be donning the most glamorous dress you own, so your make-up has to complement it.
To play up your eyes, you can achieve a really luxe look with shades of brown, beige and gold. Try MAC pigment pots in Chocolate, Vanilla and Melon. Start by applying Vanilla across the entire eyelid. Next, create sultry definition by shading the Chocolate colour deep into the crease of your eyesocket, winging it outwards in a triangle shape to meet your eyebrow. Finally, add highlights with Melon, applying it to the inner corners of the eye and a light dusting at the peak of your eyebrows.
Shimmering shades of gold and brown will really make blue eyes stand out. Burgundy and taupe colours are also great choices. For added glamour you could also have semi-permanent lash enhancements applied, which will stay looking great for your honeymoon too.
